GIVING BACK

Water is a

Human Right

Whoever you are, wherever you are, water is a human right.

Access to safe drinking water and sanitation are internationally recognized human rights, derived from the right to an adequate standard of living under Article 11(1) of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

DRINKING WATER

Canada has approximately 9% of the world’s water supply, but within this country, not everyone has access to safe drinking water (White et al. 2012). The Government of Canada has committed to continue working collaboratively to secure access to drinkable water and improve water safety and security in northern Canada.

INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES

Water security is a challenge for Indigenous communities. While definitions of water security vary, they usually center on the concept of a reliable supply of safe water (in both quality and quantity) (Cook and Bakker 2012). The importance of water to the wellness of remote northern communities is rooted in the four dimensions of water security: quality, preference, availability, and access (Goldhar et al. 2013).

WATER SECURITY

Ground Water Contamination

The importance of water to the wellness of remote northern communities is rooted in the four dimensions of water security: quality, preference, availability, and access (Goldhar et al. 2013).

Water is linked with a sense of identity and place as regions are often described according to the traditional place name related to water. Water has spiritual and cultural dimensions in the participating communities.

As of January 2022, there were 28 Indigenous communities across Canada under a short-term drinking water advisory (Canada 2020b), and 28 communities have long-term advisories (Canada 2020c). Source: Indigenous Services Canada.  As of June 19, 2023.

Contaminated ground water sources contain: Dangerous Bacteria, Heavy Metals, Pharmaceuticals, Pesticides, and Insecticides.

BOILED WATER ADVISORIES

Every year, we provide safe water for First Nations communities.

As winners of the Global Bottled Water Awards for Community, Service and Responsibility (CSR), our 10L humanitarian Initiative was formed to support Indigenous communities across the country providing access to pure quality Canadian drinking water.

Depending on the need, we help support logistics to each community, establish collaborative Indigenous partnerships, and help foster sustainable opportunities for Indigenous ownership, employment and the management of water supply and distribution.
